BLUES SOLID IN WIN OVER RAMS

W Soccer
Two second half goals lifted the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the host Ryerson Rams in the OUA regular season opener for both teams on Wednesday night at Lamport Stadium.

The Blues had the first chance to get on the board in the 15th minute when first-year forward Jennifer Siu (London, Ont.) redirected a corner kick on the Ryerson goal. Rams keeper Misha Maric of Toronto, playing in her first OUA game, came up big with her first save of the contest. The best chance of the opening half came in the 44th minute when Siu broke in alone and rang her shot off the bar.

The Rams came out strong in the second half, controlling the play for first 12 minutes. Despite a pair of quality chances, Ryerson was not able to find the back of the net. Erica Basso (Richmond Hill, Ont.) gave Toronto a 1-0 advantage in the 61st minute by converting a nifty crossing pass from Heidi Borgmann (Mississauga, Ont.). Eight minutes later, Siu scored the first goal of her OUA career to give Blues a 2-0 lead.

Keeper Mary Anne Barnes from Scarborough, Ont. recorded the victory and clean sheet for the Blues.

The Blues (1-0-0) face the Nipissing Lakers in their home opener on Sunday at Varsity Centre.
