The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team downed the Ottawa Gee-Gees 2-0 at the University of Ottawa’s Sports Complex on Saturday, September 13. The victory marks the first win over the Gee Gees in U of T women’s soccer history.
In a game of high pressure possession soccer, the Blues got on board first when Christina Fantozzi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) passed to striker Mel Seabra (Brampton, Ont.) who chipped it into the Gee Gees net at the eight minute mark of the match.
The Blues continued to apply pressure and capitalized again as Fantozzi knocked one past the Ottawa goalkeeper off a beautiful pass from teammate Heidi Borgmann (Mississauga, Ont.) giving Toronto a 2-0 lead at the half.
At the 88 minute mark, Gee Gees midfielder Rachel Swetnam (Halifax, N.S.) almost spoiled the Blues shut out when she took a rocketing shot that hit the inside of the goal post and bounced out. The Blues defence were able to hold off any additional chances and Mary Anne Barnes (Scarborough, Ont.) earned her third shut-out of the season.
The Blues remain undefeated in OUA action and are the only team to have not allowed a goal against in league play.
The Varsity Blues continue their trip to the nation’s capital when they take on the Ravens tomorrow at Carleton University’s Ravens’ Field at 3:15 p.m.
