RAVENS UPSET NO.5 BLUES IN OUA PLAYOFFS

The Carleton Ravens upset the No. 5 Toronto Varsity Blues, 1-0, in OUA women’s soccer quarter-final action on Sunday, October 26 at Varsity Centre.

Ottawa native Aisha Stinson headed a cross off a corner kick, from teammate Hilary Peirce (Ottawa, Ont.), past Blues goalie Mary Anne Barnes (Scarborough, Ont.) and a sprawling Shirley Ho (Calgary, Alta.) in the 35th minute for what would be the eventual game winner.

Playing through a downpour in the first half neither team established great ball control but the Ravens managed to capitalize on their only true scoring chance in the first 45 minutes of play.

The Blues had an opportunity to take the lead in opening minutes of the game, however, Briony DeMott’s (Victoria, B.C.) shot hit a post and a crossbar without crossing the goal line to keep the game scoreless.

The host Blues came out pressing in the second half but as quickly as they mounted an offensive attack, the Ravens defence did their job in keeping balls away from the front of the net.

Toronto poured on the pressure and with one final push, Ho got on the end of a Jennifer Siu (London, Ont.) corner kick but hit the side of the goal post with under four minutes to go in the game.

Toronto had two additional corner kick situations within the final two minutes of regulation but was unable to muster a quality goal-scoring opportunity and punch the equalizer past Ravens goalie Erin Klimas (Russell, Ont.).

With the win, Carleton advances to the OUA Final Four which will be hosted by their neighbours, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Gee-Gees defeated the Queen’s Gaels, 1-0, in an earlier quarter-final match and are the OUA East’s highest remaining seed.
