BLUES DOWN GRYPHONS 24-8, FACE GOLDEN HAWKS IN SEMI-FINAL

Jen Held (Brampton, Ont.) and Tory Merrill (Orangeville, Ont.) recorded eight points each as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s lacrosse team finished their 2008 OUA regular season campaign with a 24-8 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, October 18 in Waterloo.

The Blues offence exploded early and would dominate the entire game. Leading 13-3 after the first half, Toronto continued to outscore the Gryphons 11-5 in the second to come away with the impressive 24-8 win.

Held recorded five goals and three assists while Merrill scored four goals and added four assists on the day. First-year attacker Sarah Woodward (Singapore) led all players with six goals and Toronto native Taryn Grieder netted three goals and three assists. Blues standout Yoko Murphy (Toronto, Ont.) also notched three goals and had two assists while first-year player Carly Brown (Dryden, Ont.) scored two goals and Sally Elasbery (Toronto, Ont.) added one.

The Varsity Blues finished the OUA regular season tied with the Western Mustangs for third place with a 7-5 record.

After six tie breaking regulations, the Blues will be ranked fourth as they travel to Waterloo for the 2008 OUA lacrosse championship October 25-26. Toronto will face the defending champions and host Laurier Golden Hawks in semi-final action on Saturday, October 25 at 8 p.m.


Western wins the tiebreaker with Toronto based on the following OUA tie-breaking rules:

- both have identical 7 win 5 loss records

- both beat each other once

- both have the same number of points head to head

- both have identical records within the division

- both have identical records vs. common opponents

- record in games against each of the other teams in the division, starting at the top of the standing and continuing in descending order - Western 1-3, Toronto 0-4
