BLUES BEAT MARAUDERS, FALL TO GOLDEN HAWKS

The University of Toronto women’s lacrosse team went 1-1 in OUA action on Saturday, October 11 at the University of Western Ontario. The Blues defeated the McMaster Marauders 20-10 before falling to the undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks 15-11 in their last two OUA regular season games of 2008.

Toronto got off to a good start on Saturday morning, scoring five unanswered goals in the first 13 minutes of play. The Marauders would score three goals in the first half and the Blues held a comfortable 7-3 lead at the midway point of the game.

Despite McMaster’s best efforts, the Blues did not let down and scored 13 goals in the second half.

Jen Held (Brampton, Ont.) and Toronto native Yoko Murphy accounted for half of Toronto’s offence, scoring five goals apiece in the 20-10 victory. Taryn Grieder (Toronto, Ont.) notched four goals and Tory Merrill (Orangeville, Ont.) and Cholden Shrestha (Toronto, Ont.) added two each.

The Blues were in for a tough game against the first-place Laurier Golden Hawks. Toronto played well overall, only trailing by two goals in each half of play. However, Laurier proved why they are the only undefeated team in the league and was able to prevent the Toronto offence from gaining a lead.

Merrill led the Blues with five goals and Greider notched three in the 15-11 loss.

The Varsity Blues currently sit in a three-way tie for second place with a 6-4-0 record. Toronto awaits next week’s results to determine their final ranking and play-off seed. The Golden Hawks host the OUA final four weekend on October 25-26 in Waterloo.
