BLUES VANQUISH VOYAGEURS

Third-year midfielder Erica Basso (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored two goals as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s soccer team defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 2-0 on Sunday, October 12 at Varsity Centre.

The No. 6 Blues got on the board in the ninth minute as Basso headed a Janessa Banwell (Toronto, Ont.) pass directly into the net.

Basso would tally her second goal of the game 15 minutes later off a beautiful cross pass from first-year midfielder Jennifer Siu.

Fourth-year Toronto goalkeeper Mary Anne Barnes (Scarborough, Ont.) made a beautiful save on a Laurentian breakaway in the 44th minute to maintain the 2-0 lead at the half.

The Blues dominated the second half but sent all of their chances just wide of the Voyageurs net. Nav Deol (Mississauga, Ont.) led Toronto in a superb defensive effort as Laurentian was unable to amount a come back. The Blues came away with a 2-0 victory.

Barnes made several key saves and earned the shut out for her squad.

The Varsity Blues travel to Kingston to take on the RMC Paladins on Saturday, October 18 and the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday, October 19 in their last two 2008 regular season matches. The games are scheduled for 3:15 p.m. on both days.
