NO. 5 BLUES HAND RIDGEBACKS FIRST LOSS OF 2026 SEASON

The No. 5 nationally ranked University of Toronto varsity Blues defeated the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 2-1 on Saturday (Sept. 12) afternoon in Oshawa, Ont.

The Blues were quick to test Ridgebacks goalkeeper Jacqueline Cardy early and notched the crucial opening goal of the match in the second minute. In the box, first-year forward Mikaela Milczarek's danced around the defence, connecting with third-year forward Kimee Liu – who's header marked her first goal in the Blue and White.

Intensity ramped up for the Ridgebacks as they looked for an equalizer. The Blues defence was strong in controlling the pace of play and keeping the ball out of harms way. When called upon, fourth-year goalkeeper Maria Godoy-Atrash with a big stop in the 25th minute on Mackenzie Scott. U of T added a second goal before the end of the first half. Liu got found herself on the scoresheet once again, this time with an assist as fellow third-year forward Ines Delhomelle slipped behind the defence and fired a strike past a diving Cardy as Toronto took a two-goal lead into halftime.

The Ridgebacks cut the lead in half to begin the second half as Scott found the back of the net to get the Ridgebacks on the scoreboard. Unphased by the goal against, U of T picked up the pace, controlling possession in the second half and generate chances near the goal. At the other end of the pitch, Godoy-Atrash was phenomenal , making seven saves in the second half to cap off an impressive afternoon for the Mississauga native.

In the late stages of the game, the Ridgebacks put the pressure on. In the stages of the match, fourth-year defender Samantha Gravina came up with two timely blocks to fend off a potential equalizer. Toronto was then effective in keeping possession in the midfield before one final clearance by fourth-year defender Natasha Budisa sealed the win for the Blues.

The Blues will have a quick turnaround, facing the Trent Excalibur on the road in Peterborough, Ont., on Sunday (Sept. 13) afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on oua.tv.
