VARSITY BLUES CROWNED OUA CHAMPIONS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues figure skating team claimed the overall title, winning the 2026 OUA Figure Skating Championship.

Achieving a podium finish in 13 of 14 events across the two-day competition, including six gold medals, the Varsity Blues finished with a team total of 106 placing them atop the overall standings. Western finished close behind in second place with 104 points, while McMaster and Waterloo tied for third with 51 points each.

The provincial championship marks the first for the Blues since last claiming the OUA title in 2022 and 10th in program history. As well, it is the first under the leadership of new first year head coach and Varsity Blues figure skating alumna Kate Mitchell.

"The team did an incredible job in every event to claim this title!" said Mitchell following the championship victory. "They put in so much work this season and it paid off out on the ice. The passion that this team has for what they do shows through their skating, and I admire how much they have done this season to bring the title home. This win means more than I can put into words; we're bringing back the OUA title in the same rink that we won it in my first year on the team in 2020. It's a very full circle moment for me! I am beyond proud of what this team has done this season and I hope to carry this success into the next!"

The Blues opened Day 2 claiming gold in the first two events as Cole Van Der Velden claimed the top position in Gold Artistic and Varsity Blues veterans Gabriella Guo and Hugo Li teamed up to win the Senior Pair Freeskate for a third consecutive season. Guo would add a third first place finish for U of T on the day in the Novice Short Program, also winning the event for a third consecutive championship.

As event winners in the two-day provincial showcase Guo, Li, Van Der Velden, Victoria Bocknek, and Anna Bazylewicz were all recognized as OUA all-stars.
