U OF T SCORES FIVE GOALS IN DAY 2 WIN OVER UPEI

Continuing competition at the 2026 National Bank Field Hockey Canada U SPORTS Championship, presented by Farm Mutual Re, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues earned an impressive 5-1 win over the UPEI Panthers on Friday (Nov. 6) afternoon in Waterloo.

Following a draw on Day 1 of the national showcase, the Blues now hold a 1-0-1 (W-L-T) record while the Panthers drop to 0-2-0. Medal matches on Sunday (Nov. 8) are determined by the results of the round-robin.

In a rainy Friday contest versus the Panthers, U of T wasted little time in pressuring their opponents to produce an early goal in the fourth minute courtesy fourth-year forward Ava Airnes. Right before the quarter break, Toronto would add another goal from a penalty corner as a deflection from first-year forward Vanessa Marques made it a two-goal advantage for the Blue and White.

After a quiet second frame, UPEI struck back with their first goal of the tournament coming in the 41st minute via Rachael Campbell. However, the Blues would steal back momentum with a three-goal fourth quarter. First, Airnes notched her second goal of the day utilizing a strong shot from in close at the 52nd minute mark. Just three minutes later a nice pass from first-year midfielder Ellie Mullins setup second-year forward Allie Lavis for a clean shot into the back of the Panthers net. Scoring was then rounded out by first-year forward Olivia Thompson right before the final buzzer.

With a high-motor throughout the entirety of the dreary matchup and the final goal of the contest, Thompson was named Player of the Match for the Varsity Blues.

Toronto will conclude their three-game round-robin tomorrow (Nov. 7) afternoon against a familiar opponent in the Waterloo Warriors. The action from Warrior Field is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., with the entirety of the tournament available to stream online via CBC Gem and CBC Sports Youtube.
