BLUES OPEN U SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP WITH DRAW VERSUS THUNDERBIRDS

In the opening match of the 2026 National Bank Field Hockey Canada U SPORTS Championship, presented by Farm Mutual Re, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues battled to a 1-1 draw with the UBC Thunderbirds on Thursday (Nov. 5) afternoon in Waterloo.

The OUA champion Blues and Canada West champion Thunderbirds proved to be an equal match on Warrior Field. Quick to start, U of T tallied the first goal of the match via a perfectly placed shot from first-year forward Vanessa Marques on a penalty stroke. However, UBC found an equalizer just four minutes later taking advantage of a scramble in front of the Toronto net which Amy Stelling capitalized on to even the game.

Following the thrilling start possession shifted back-and-forth with much of the contest taking place in the middle of the pitch as neither side could find momentum for a long stretch. Second-year goalkeeper Mary Yang made several key saves while the defensive play of Varsity Blues veteran Kirsten D'Silva and 2026 National Player of the Year Maggie Mullins were vital to shutting down a strong UBC offence. Mullins would receive Player of the Match honours for her efforts.

Thunderbirds goalkeeper Robyn Goh also shined at the other side of the field to maintain the stalemate through the first match of the national showcase.

Next up for the Blues will be a Friday (Nov. 6) afternoon contest against the AUFH champion UPEI Panthers. Action from Warrior Field will once again begin at 4 p.m. All the games throughout the entirety of the tournament are available to stream online via CBC Gem and CBC Sports Youtube.
