Several University of Toronto Varsity Blues fencers took to the piste at the Canadian Senior Nationals this past weekend in Kingston.
Topping the Blues results ws Jarov Seraphim who earned a Top 10 finish in the senior men's epee placing sixth in the 118-competitor field. Representing his home team of Dynamo Fencing Club, Seraphim went 5-1 during round-robin matches. Two more wins would help him reach the quarter-final round where he would fall to the eventual national silver medalist. Also competing in the senior men's epee, Varsity Blues fencer Nicholas Gutierrez-Sarabia would place just outside the Top 10 in 12th, while recent U of T fencing alumnus and Vango Toronto fencer Leon Xiao claimed gold in the category.
Second-year sabre specialist Matthew Tang grabbed gold in the junior men's sabre event, beating out 60 total entrants in the category. Tang doubled up on his weekend representing his home club of YJ Fencing Centre by also finishing 11th in the senior men's sabre bracket which also featured 62 competitors.
Further results included a 19th place finish in the senior women's sabre from U of T Varsity Blues veteran Janna Elshakankiri, while second-year Blues fencer Salma Elshakankiri finished 29th in the junior women's sabre.
The Blues will open their OUA competition schedule in late October, returning to Kingston for the Queen's Open.
