Concluding their regular season campaign, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team recorded a win, loss and draw in three games across two days and two venues this weekend.
Toronto opened their busy weekend schedule on Saturday (Sept. 27) in London earning an exciting 9-8 victory over the McMaster Marauders, before dropping a 12-3 decision to the host Western Mustangs.
With just 90 seconds remaining in the Blues first match of the weekend, third-year attack Isabella Ward served as the hero delivering the game-winner in the one-goal victory versus McMaster. An outstanding effort all game long, Ward would finish the contest with a game-high six goals, while also adding two assists for good measure. Fourth-year attack Rheanna Swanson tallied two goals, while first-year midfielder Trinity Meachem rounded out the U of T goal scorers with a single. Third-year goalie Elizabeth McDonald earned the win in net.
Shifting to the second game of the day, goals became much tougher to come by versus the home side Mustangs. Swanson would find the back of the Western net twice, while second-year midfielder Jasleen Sandhu added one more for the Blues in the tough road loss.
Traveling to St. Catharines for a Sunday (Sept. 28) morning showdown with the Brock Badgers, the regular season finale would end in an 11-11 stalemate.
After a quick goal from Sandhu, U of T were in tough as five unanswered Badgers goals handed the home team a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter. However, the Blues were able to take back momentum and draw to within one right before the halftime break. After 11 total goals were scored between both teams in the third quarter, the game would shift to a defensive showcase with neither team able to add another goal through the duration of the fourth and overtime periods, resulting in the draw. Swanson added another hat-trick to conclude the regular season with a team-high 22 goals. Sandhu and Ward notched two goals apiece, while Lauren Wilcox, Natasha James, Sophie Cho, and Meachem each registered a single marker. First-year goalie Eva Balum served in net for the draw.
U of T conclude the regular season with a 3-5-1 (W-L-T) record. Focus will now shift towards preparations for the 2025 OUA Women's Lacrosse Championship scheduled for Oct. 17-19 at Wilfrid Laurirer University. The Blues claimed OUA bronze at the provincial showcase a season ago.
