CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: OUA WOMEN'S LACROSSE

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team open competition at the 2025 OUA Championship this Friday, Oct. 17 at Ansley Alumni Field in Waterloo.

U of T enter the championship as the No. 6 seed after accumulating a regular season record of 3-5-1 (W-L-T). Toronto saw their three wins come against McGill, Ontario Tech and McMaster, while drawing even with Brock in their regular season finale. The Blues will be in tough though as they match-up with the No. 3 seed Queen's Gaels in the first round.

Leading the charge once again for the Blues was fourth-year attack Rheanna Swanson. The psychology and French double major was a electric all season long finishing fifth in the OUA with 22 goals and 27 points through eight games. This was highlighted by a five goal and two assist outing in Toronto's 9-6 victory over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. In total, Swanson recorded three or more goals in four contests this fall.

Also reaching double-digit goal during the 2025 campaign, third-year attack Isabella Ward provided another playmaker for the Blues this season. Along with her 13 goals, Ward also was successful at setting up her teammates with seven assists, ranking sixth in the OUA in that category. Her season highlight came in Toronto's narrow 9-8 win over McMaster as she notched a season-high six goals, including the game-winner, and two assists.

Last fall, the Blues were able to turn a 2-7 regular season record into an OUA bronze medal, going on a roll at the championship weekend. U of T will be looking to replicate the same formula in 2025.

Action between the Blues and Gaels for their quarter-final match-up is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The winner will advance to an OUA semifinal on Saturday, while the loser will advance through the consolation bracket.
