The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's rugby team fell 60-27 to the York Lions on Saturday (Sept. 20) night at Varsity Stadium.
After a ceremony honouring the seven graduating Blues the two teams took the field in a spirited tilt. The Blues fell behind early in the match as York went on a 31-0 run to begin the night. U of T got on the scoreboard in the 26
th minute as first-year Youna Uehara's try began a strong finish to the half for Toronto. A 36
th minute try from first-year wing Allison Viggers and a 40
th minute try by fourth-year fly-half Sydney Heighington kept the Blues in striking distance, trailing 36-15 at the half.
The second half saw the Blues come out flying as first-year standout Chioma Duru scored her first of two tries in the match and Heighington added another try. Back-to-back tries from the Lions allowed for them to restore their lead but Duru showed her power, storming her way into the try zone. Two tries from York in the final two minutes of the game put the game out of reach as the Blues record dropped to 1-3 on the season.
Heighington finished the game with one conversion.
The Blues will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 27) afternoon when they take on the Guelph Gryphons in Guelph, Ont. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
