BLUES FIGHT HARD IN DOUBLEHEADER IN PETERBOROUGH

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team dropped both games in their doubleheader, falling 9-7 to the Guelph Gryphons and 12-6 to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon in Peterborough, Ont.

Fourth-year attack Rheanna Swanson and first-year midfielder Ashley Klenk were standouts for the Blue and White. Between the two games as Swanson continued her outstanding season with six goals and Klenk netted three.

The game against Guelph was a tightly contested contest with the Blues trailing 6-5 at halftime. Swanson took the lead offensively for Toronto with a hat trick but goals from Klenk and third-year attack Isabella Ward display a great offensive showing for U of T. In the second half, Guelph scored three answered goals to extend their lead but the Blues did not go down easy as Klenk secured a hat trick with a pair of goals in the fourth quarter but despite the comeback attempt the Blues fell to the Gryphons.

In the second game of the day against Laurier, the Golden Hawks got off to a quick start scoring the games first two goals. Ward's goal got Toronto on the scoreboard to cut the lead in half. The Blues were quick to respond to another Laurier goal as fifth-year attack Pippa Sinyard scored her first goal of the season. At halftime, the Blues found themselves trailing 5-4.

In the second half Laurier began to pull ahead with three straight goals. Toronto answered back with two of their own as Swanson continued her offensive excellence, scoring her 15th goal of the season. First-year midfielder Trinity Meachem's first goal of the season cut into the deficit but the Golden Hawks managed four straight goals to secure the win.

Third-year goalie Elizabeth McDonald started both games for U of T making nine saves.

The Blues are back in action on Saturday (Sept. 27) in Hamilton, Ont., taking on the McMaster Marauders at 8:30 a.m. and then facing the Western Mustangs at 12 p.m.
