The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team split their doubleheader on Sunday (Sept. 14) afternoon at Varsity Stadium.
U of T defeated the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 9-6 in their opening match before falling to the Queen's Gaels 12-3. Fourth-year attack Rheanna Swanson continued her strong offensive play this season, scoring five goals against Ontario Tech and adding another two goals on the day against Queen's.
Toronto jumped out to a quick lead in the match as Swanson opened the scoring 90 seconds into the game. The Toronto native scored a hat trick in the first half on home turf. Toronto had a three nothing lead after the first quarter as third-year attack Isabella Ward scored her first of two goals on the day and first-year midfielder Natasha James added a goal with 96 seconds remaining. Ontario Tech scored three goals in the second quarter but U of T answered with three of their own as Swanson continued to find the back of the net and second-year midfielder Jasleen Sandhu extended the lead to 6-3.
Swanson and Ward continued their scoring ways in the second half with the Blues keeping foot on the gas pedal throughout the game. Defensively, U of T was strong in an impressive all-around performance from the team. Third-year Elizabeth McDonald and first-year Eva Balum each played a half in net for the Blues, combining for 12 saves.
In the second game of the day against Queen's the Blues were trailing to the Gaels but kept fighting throughout the game. Swanson continued her strong play, giving Toronto signs of life with her sixth and seventh goals of the day. Ward added her third goal on the day in the first half as the two Blues attack's were standouts throughout the day. McDonald was strong in net against Queen's making big saves to keep Toronto in the game. The third-year human biology student finished the game with 15 saves.
The Blues are back on the field for a doubleheader on Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon in Peterborough, Ont. The Blues will take on the Guelph Gryphons at 12 p.m. and face off against the Laurier Golden Hawks 5:15 p.m.
