OFFENCE SHINES IN BLUES FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's rugby team secured their first win of the 2025 season defeating the Trent Excalibur 52-43 in Peterborough, Ont.

First-year player Chioma Duru and third-year wing Adele Church were standouts for the Blues. Duru scored two tries in the match with her playmaking on full display. Meanwhile, Church had three tries.

U of T got off to a fast start with Church scored the games opening try less than one minute into the match. After Trent tied the game at 7-7, the Blues offence went on a run, scoring four tries in the first half.

Duru began the strong run of offence for Toronto, storming her way into the try zone to regain the lead. Duru then set up Church, as the London, Ont., native made her way past the try line to make it a two score game. Fourth-year fly half Sydney Heighington added to the U of T lead as the Blues were ahead 26-7. Trent's offence matched the tone of U of T as the half progressed but Toronto's surge sent them into halftime with a 26-24 lead.

In the second half Duru and Church continued their incredible offensive performances as Duru scored the Blues first try of the half. Duru's passing was on full display, firing a pass to Church who was off to the races, taking the ball all the way to the house for her third try of the afternoon.

The second half was back and forth throughout the frame but with under two minutes to play, Duru powered her way through Trent's defence and past the try line to secure the win for U of T.

Heighington had six conversions in the game.

The Blues next game will take place on Saturday (Sept. 20) night when they host the York Lions at Varsity Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available at varsityblues.ca/tickets.
