This past weekend, University of Toronto Varsity Blues squash student-athlete Will Harris claimed gold in the Men's A Singles category at the Connor, Clark, & Lunn Private Capital 2025 Canadian Senior Championships.
Hosted by Squash Canada at the Toronto Cricket, Skating & Curling Club, the national showcase event featured championship matches across 25 different categories, all taking place from May 7-11.
Competing in the top competitive division of Men's A Singles, Harris earned three straight wins across three straight days to earn his place in the gold medal match. Facing off against Sam Burley in the championship final on Sunday (May 11), the pair delivered a thrilling five-game finale to close out the weekend.
After Harris claimed an 11-8 opening game win, a back-and-forth sequence began. Burley claimed Game 2 by an 11-4 final score, followed by an identical 11-4 win for the OUA all-star Harris in Game 3. With the gold medal on the line, Burley was able to extend the best-of-five series with an 11-6 Game 4 victory. However, Harris would not be denied the win as he rallied for an impressive 11-4 Game 5 win, securing national gold.
"This was my first time returning to competition after three months of recovering from a concussion, but the David L. MacIntosh Sport Medicine Clinic at U of T helped me get back to a place where I could win the tournament," mentioned Harris. "Competing in Toronto was amazing because of the support of friends, family, and teammates which gave me a huge boost. And then before the final match several people told me to enjoy being on the court and avoid any stress or pressure. That advice was incredibly useful to stay composed."
Harris has been a member of the Varsity Blues men's squash team since 2021. The kinesiology major has twice been named an OUA all-star as he has helped the U of T men claim two provincial bronze and one silver across four seasons.
"I have seen Will's ability and focus on the squash court go from strength to strength," said Varsity Blues men's squash head coach John Lennard. "He is not only a fabulous player, he is also a great team player. It is a very exciting year coming up as Will takes over the role as team captain."
