Competing at the XXVII YONEX Pan Am Individual Championships this past weekend in Lima, Peru, Varsity Blues badminton standout Jackie Dent picked up international silver in her first appearance at the senior Pan Am event.
An OUA all-star and national champion with the Varsity Blues this past season, Dent teamed up with Crystal Lai to represent Team Canada in the women's doubles event at the annual showcase. In a field of 19 pairs, the duo won three straight matches to earn their spot in the gold medal final. Dent and Lai began their run through the elimination matches with a 21-11, 21-7 victory versus the USA. They then scored a 21-12, 21-1 win over Mexico in the quarter-finals before securing a 21-10, 21-8 semifinal win against Brazil. Matching up against Allison Lee and Lauren Lam of the USA, Dent and Lai came up just short in a 21-11, 21-13 defeat versus the gold medal winning duo.
Adding more Varsity Blues representation, U of T alumni Jonathan Lai and Michelle Li combined to add three more medals to the 11 total medals won by Team Canada. A four-time Olympian, Li grabbed bronze in the women's singles bracket, while 2018-19 OUA MVP Lai secured mixed doubles silver alongside Crystal Lai and men's doubles bronze with Nyl Yakura.
Team Canada will next compete at the TotalEnergies BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2025 in China, facing off against Chinese Taipei, Czechia and Korea in Pool B for the May 2025 international competition.Â
