Following team gold for the Varsity Blues at the 2025 YONEX Canadian University College Championships, several U of T badminton student-athletes earned additional medals competing in the individual event championships through Saturday (Mar. 15) and Sunday (Mar. 16) at Université Laval.
The individual event championships provide another opportunity for athletes to represent both their schools and club teams, determining national champions in all the various disciplines: singles, doubles, mixed doubles.
Beginning with the men's doubles category, the duo of Blues badminton athletes Nathan Mills and Harold Tan captured gold. Together the pair picked up three quick victories on Saturday evening to advance to the Final Four the following morning. In a semifinal showdown versus Victor Lai and Jasper Tang, the U of T doubles team continued to showcase their consistency with winning scores of 21-17, 21-17 to earn their spot in the gold medal round. Matching up with Daniel Leung and Timothy Lock in the event final, the two teams went back-and-forth in a thrilling display of skill and resiliency. Mills and Tan captured the first game of the best-of-three series 21-19, before falling in extra-points 22-20, setting up a crucial third game. The Varsity Blues pair were able to pull away in the end, securing the top step of the podium with a 21-16 final game win.
Shifting to the women's doubles event, U of T student-athlete Jackie Dent partnered with Waterloo Warrior Emily Xia for the individual title. Together the pair went undefeated on Saturday, never conceding a single game en route to the Final Four. In the semifinal round, they defeated another team consisting of a U of T badminton athlete in Chloe Choi and Waterloo Warrior Ashley Wong. Then facing off against Chloe Hoang and Sophia Nong in the event final, Dent and her partner found themselves quickly facing an uphill battle as they dropped the first game 21-13 in the best-of-three series. Bouncing back though, the duo would win games two and three by final scores of 21-17, 21-19 to score another gold medal result.
Rounding out the medals for Blues badminton athletes, Choi would collect bronze in the women's doubles as a semifinalist, while Dent would also add a bronze alongside Thomas Dent of the Waterloo Warriors as semifinalists in the mixed doubles category.
