Alongside the University of Toronto Varsity Blues badminton team winning the Canadian University College Championship team national title this weekend, several Varsity Blues student-athletes also represented their clubs in the individual portion of the national championship in Quebec.
U of T badminton players would capture six podiums during the individual portion of the national showcase.
Highlighting the outstanding results was national gold in the women's doubles event for Varsity Blues student-athletes Chloe Choi and Emma Meng. Together the pair went undefeated on their way to the top step of the podium, earning four total victories including a 21-15, 21-15 win in the event final. Both Choi and Meng would add a second individual medal to their weekends as the 2026 OUA Rookie of the Year Meng secured national silver in the women's singles and the Varsity Blues veteran Choi joined fellow U of T teammate Chenyi Tao for national bronze in the mixed doubles.
Another pair of double medalists from U of T, the duo of Nathan Mills and Harold Tan once again teamed for men's doubles action finishing second overall. This is a second straight season the pair have reached the national podium, capturing gold in 2025. The duo also spent the summer competing for Team Canada at the FISU World University Games. This weekend, Tan would also earn national bronze in the men's singles. The Varsity Blues medal haul was then rounded out by Mills who also earned national gold in the mixed doubles event alongside Waterloo Warriors standout Allison Cheng.
In addition to the medal haul, Meng was recognized with the True Sport Award at the end of the tournament, honouring the player who best represented sportsmanship and fair play as selected by officials.
The outstanding results at the national showcase will assuredly lift several of the U of T players rankings within the Badminton Canada. Currently Meng ranks No. 1 in women's singles, while Choi is near behind at No. 4. Tao holds the No. 4 position in the men's doubles with partner Oliver Chen. And the trio of Meng, Jackie Dent, and Choi all rank 2-3-4 with their respective women's doubles partners.Â
