Competing at the 2025 OUA Badminton Championship, hosted by York University at the Tait McKenzie Centre, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues secured their spot in the final four at the provincial showcase with an undefeated record during pool play.
Looking to defend the title they claimed a year ago, the Varsity Blues started right where they left off, delivering an unblemished 3-0 record through round-robin match. The Blue secured first place overall in Pool A, earning a bye through the quarter-final matches to jump directly into the OUA semifinals on Sunday (Feb. 9) morning. U of T opened their run with a hard-fought 6-4 victory over Ontario Tech on Friday morning, before knocking off Western 10-0 later in the day. The Blues then matched that 10-0 effort with an identical victory versus McMaster on Saturday morning.
Highlighting the U of TÂ performance in their win over Ontario Tech, Blues veteran Jacqueline Cheung earned two wins teaming with Edward Zhang for an exciting 24-22, 21-18 mixed doubles victory, while also partnering with Chloe Choi to make quick work in a 21-5, 21-2 women's doubles win. In another thrilling contest during the opening match for Toronto, Brooks Liu battles to a critical men's singles win, defeating his Ontario Tech counterpart 21-14, 24-22.
Shifting to the Blues win over Western, Harold Tan impressed in back-to-back doubles victories, being joined by Nathan Mills for a 21-8, 21-14 men's doubles win and by Rebecca Lee for a 21-11, 21-8 mixed doubles victory. Sweeping all 10 matches, second-year Blue Joanna Xu also proved to be a standout, claiming the win in her women's singles contest by a dominating margin of 21-2, 21-4.
Closing out round-robin play on Sunday morning, Chenyi Tao earned a decisive 21-12, 21-14 win in the Blues No. 1 men's singles slot.
