CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: OUA FIGURE SKATING

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues figure skating team will head just down the road to the Mattamy Athletic Centre as TMU serve as host for the 2025 OUA Figure Skating Championship from Mar. 4-5.

U of T figure skating have earned a provincial medal in eight consecutive seasons, claiming OUA silver in 2024. The Blues will be aiming to keep that streak going, while also challenging for a return to the top step on the podium. Toronto had a streak of six straight OUA banners from 2016 to 2022.

Helping lead the way for the Blues will be fifth-year veteran Hugo Li. A member of the Blues last OUA championship squad in 2022, Li brings plenty of experience and leadership which is one of the reasons he serves as team captain. Additionally he has had major success at recent events, including two golds and a silver at the recent Brock Invitational which the Blues won in the overall category. Joining Li as a major contributor, third-year skater Gabrielle Guo broke out during the 2023-24 campaign, earning OUA all-star status as a gold medal winner at the 2024 OUA Championship in the Novice Short Program and Senior Couples Pairs. And Blues newcomer Victoria Bockneck has shined in her first season at U of T, previously competing as a member of the McMaster Marauders. Bockneck has placed first in two Freeskate events this year and has immediately stepped in as a significant contributor with the Blues.

In addition to winning the overall team title at the Brock Invitational in early February, U of T figure skating have also taken to showcases at Varsity Blues hockey intermissions, and took part in the first ever Spring Festival Celebrations at Nathan Phillips Square.

"Our season got off to a bit of a rocky start with so much uncertainty surrounding our rules and competition schedule which required us to be adaptable and come together as a team to work through these issues," said Varsity Blues figure skating head coach Brittany de Lapeyre. "Now with less than two weeks until OUA's, we are definitely dialed in and ready to put our best foot forward and wish to bring the championship title back to U of T."

The two-day provincial showcase will begin early morning on Tuesday, Mar. 4 inside the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Events will conclude with the large-scale team synchro on Wednesday (Mar. 5), where the overall champion will be determined.
