BLUES MAKE THEIR MARK WITH TEAM CANADA AT PAN AM CUP

Several Varsity Blues badminton players recently competed as members of Team Canada, winning the overall mixed team championship at the 2025 Pan American Cup held in Aguas Calientes, Mexico from Feb. 13-16.

Team Canada captured the prestigious title after a thrilling 3-1 championship final victory over Team USA. Prior to the gold medal match, Canada earned 5-0 pool play victories versus Mexico and Cuba, before knocking off Guatemala 3-1 in the semifinals.

"Everyone on the team contributed to this victory, and I'm incredibly proud of each member's effort," said Canadian national team head coach Mike Butler. "It was a total team effort from start to finish."

Current Varsity Blues badminton student-athletes taking part in the competition as members of Team Canada included 2025 OUA Badminton Female MVP Jacqueline Cheung and 2025 OUA badminton all-star Jackie Dent. Both contributed to the Blues recent 2025 OUA Championship victory, helping U of T win their second consecutive provincial banner.

In addition to current U of T badminton student-athlete, there were also Varsity Blues alumni on the team, including Jonathan Lai and four-time Olympian Michelle Li.

With the victory, Team Canada has now qualified to represent the Americas on the world stage at the 2025 Sudirman Cup, scheduled to take place in Xiamen, China from April 27 – May 4.
