The University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field team served as host for the annual Hal Brown Last Chance Meet on Friday (Feb. 14) inside the Bruce Kidd Field House at the Athletic Centre.
With the meet serving as the last home event before provincial and national championships being, the Blues took the time to honour their graduating senior student-athletes. For the men this included: Emmett Bravakis, Felimon Henok, Brandon Tang, Anton Mlynczyk, Nick Trieu, Jabez Siu, Mason McGregor, and Christopher Stamandianos. And for the women, this included: Megan Torrance, Emma Dale, Emma Lo, Kaylie Borntraeger, Asima Kidwai, Joud Dabous, Sophie LEvasseur, Marie Berube Boutin, Quinn Miller, Laure Tymen, and Voke Ewhrudjakpor.
In the meet competition, the Blues received several strong results. Beginning on the track, Tang placed fourth overall in a field of 35 sprinters for the men's 60m, posting a time of 6.99. In the women's 60m dash, Ivy Atem finished third overall among the 23 entrants, with a finals time of 7.97. Shifting distances, Sam Myers and Killian Naughton captured a 1-2 finish for the Blues in the men's 600m, posting times of 1:21.36 and 1:22.76, respectively. And in the 1000m, Mlynczyk crossed the line first at 2:30.01, with Stamandianos just behind in third at 2:31.77. Continuing to push the distance, veteran Blues distance runner Ben Shore took second in the men's 3000m with a time of 8:45.23, while Sarah Luedke placed first in the women's 3000m posting a time of 9:56.98. Closing out the track podiums for the day. Brandon Cidade and Andrej Prekajski scored another 1-2 for U of T in the men's 1 Mile, crossing at 4:19.82 and 4:21.42.
Shifting to the field events, Dale reached the top step in the women's high jump, successfully clearing 1.60m without a failed attempt. In the women's long jump, Hasveena Arulrajan tied for first with a best leap of 5.27m. In the women's triple jump, Allison MacDonald was the lone woman to clear 11 metres, placing first with a best mark of 11.23m. The Toronto men garnered another 1-2 in the men's long jump as Clarence Cheung delivered on a jump of 6.83m and Justen Denman placed right behind at 6.70m. Then in the throws, Maakor Okai recorded a best toss of 11.43m in the women's shot put. Okai also added a second in weight throw, placing just behind teammate Lily Spoozak. Spoozak's best tossed marked at 16.97m, while Okai just crossed the 16-metre mark at 16.03m.Â
With the invitational season now coming to a close, the Blues will look to make a mark at the OUA Track & Field Championships, scheduled to take place Feb. 21-22 in Windsor, Ont. The best of the best will then make their way back to Windsor to compete in the U SPORTS Track & Field Championships from Mar. 6-8.
