The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's curling team will head to Idylwylde Golf and Country Club this coming weekend for the 2025 OUA Women's Curling Championship, hosted by Laurentian University from Jan. 31 – Feb. 2.
Heading to Sudbury, Ont., the Blues will be looking to capture a winning record with a young talented roster featuring just two returners from last winter, both of whom were first-year student-athletes just a season ago. Throughout the 2024-25 campaign this year, the youthful team has captured wins over the likes of McMaster University, Ontario Tech, Humber College, and Mohawk College. The group will look to those winning experiences as game-plans for the preliminary round of the provincial championship, matching up with McMaster again, along with TMU, York, and Brock.
Leading the charge for the Blues will be second-year third Stella Armstrong and first-year skip Ally Sone. Armstrong brings strong sweeping skills and a great knowledge of the game, while Sone has stepped right into the vacated skip role exhibiting great confidence and excellent shot-making ability. They are joined by second-year Varsity Blues curler Nadia Jouaneh, and first-year trio Julia Gai, Jane Lee, and Danielle Marcantonio.
This season also marks the first for U of T curling under the leadership of Susan Baird, who stepped into the head coach position for both the women's and men's teams after previously serving as a Blues assistant coach since the 2021-22 campaign.
"While our team this year may lack in experience compared to our OUA competitors, they have been working hard on their technical skills and bringing together their individual strengths," said Baird. "We would love to have a winning record during the pool play portion of the championship and advance to the playoffs, but regardless this will be an amazing opportunity to learn from our opponents and build towards the future with this young team."
U of T opens their championship schedule versus Toronto-based opponents York and TMU on Friday, Jan. 31, with start times of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. They close out preliminaries with games against McMaster and Brock on Saturday (Feb. 1), with qualified teams then advancing to the playoff rounds on Sunday (Feb. 2).
