The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's curling team fell out of contention at the OUA Curling Championships following two losses on Day 2 of the provincial showcase in Guelph on Saturday (Feb. 3).
After finishing Day 1 of the championships with a 1-1 record, Toronto suffered one-point losses to Western (6-5) and McMaster (5-4) on Saturday, knocking them out of advancement to the elimination rounds.
The team of Grace Cave, Amanda Smith, Janice Pang, Danielle Serra, Stella Armstrong, and Nadia Jouaneh maintained their composure in a back-and-forth Day 2 opener against the Mustangs. However, a three score fourth end for the opponents from London kept Western ahead by one through the end of the eighth end.
Looking to rebound in the late evening matches, Toronto nearly pulled off the comeback with three points tallied through the last two ends, but it would fall just short against the Marauders.
The Blues concluded the round robin matches with a 1-3 record, finishing third in Pool B. Despite being knocked out of advancement, the U of T women showed incredible resilience throughout the tournament keeping competitive in every outing throughout the two days at the Guelph Curling Club.
"Our Blues women had some tough pool play matches at the event, but they showed very well," said Varsity Blues curling head coach Guy Yerama. "Stepping into the skip position this season, Grace led the team to much improvement this year."
