BLUES TRACK AND FIELD OPEN SEASON AT CORNELL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field team opened their 2024-25 campaign this past weekend, attending the Cornell University Greg Page Relays in Ithaca, N.Y.

MEN'S RESULTS
Highlighting the Varsity Blues men's team results, second-year sprinter Logan Duley set a new U of T track and field program record posting a time of 6.80 in the 60m, placing second overall in the event. First-year sprinter Parker Long also cracked the Top 7 in the event, finishing in sixth place (6.98). Duley would add a fifth-place result in the 200m (23.02), while Long also notched a seventh-place finish (23.21) in the longer sprint.

Shifting to the 300m, Felimon Henok and Caiden Schultz placed seventh (35.47) and eighth (35.48), finishing just one one hundredth of a second apart. Then in the 500m event, Christopher De Martin claimed sixth overall (1:08.20).

U of T also impressed in the distance events, claiming the top spot in both the 1000m and men's 1 mile run. First-year runner Samuel Myers posted a time of 2:27.27 to finish a second ahead of his closest competition, earning first overall in the 1000m. Both Killian Naughton and Brandon Cidade also in the Top 10, crossing the line in seventh (2:34.25) and ninth (2:35.45), respectively. Meanwhile, fellow first-year runner Andrej Prekajski finished ahead of five Cornell runners with a time of 4:19.78 to place first in the 1 mile as the only Varsity Blue in the event.

Toronto also took first in the 4x800m relay with a time of 7:58.27 courtesy the team of Cidade, Myers, Naughton, and Prekajski.

In the jumps, Varsity Blues veteran Aiden Grout took first in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.15m. First-year jumper Alec Brent also grabbed third in the event with a jump of 2.03m. Fourth-year jumper Ryan Denman also claimed first for the Blues in the long jump, posting a best on the day of 7.24m. Another first-year competitor for Toronto, Tyler Robertson placed sixth as well with a leap of 6.53m. In the triple jump, Tobi Oyedele and Jeevesh Balendra finished in the Top 10, placing sixth (13.67m) and eighth (13.27m).

Rounding out the Blues results, Jason Okpere placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 12.26m and eighth in the weight throw with a distance of 14.34m.
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS
A pair of first-year Varsity Blues sprinters were standouts at Cornell, achieving impressive results in multiple events. Gloria Etim and Alexandra Tenn took to the track to earn Top 7 results in both the 60m and 200m, highlighting by a first-place finish of 24.97 for Etim in the latter. Etim added a fifth-place result in the 60m (7.71), while Tenn took fifth in the 200m (26.06) and seventh in the 60m (7.75). Fellow first-year sprinter Peyton Docherty also cracked the Top 10 in the 200m (26.88), finishing ninth.

Shifting to a trio of veteran sprinters in the 300m, Michaela Wilson captured fourth (41.44), Laure Tymen took fifth (41.96), and Megan Torrance placed seventh (42.52) in a field of 40 runners. Rounding out the sprint performances, Quinn Miller captured third in the finals of the 60m hurdles (8.74).

In the distance events, Marie Berube Boutin and Kaitlyn Koyanagi finished fifth (3:09.08) and sixth (3:10.30) in the women's 1000m, respectively. And in the relays, the quartet of Tymen, Tenn, Docherty, and Torrance placed second in the 4x400m (4:04.44).

Taking to the field, Allison MacDonald produced the best result for the Varsity Blues with an 11.50m jump in the women's triple jump, placing first overall among the 12 competitors from four different institutions. Varsity Blues newcomer Lily Sppozak took second in the weight throw with a toss of 16.34m, while U of T veteran Voke Ewhrudjakpor claimed fourth in the shot put with a measurement of 12.30m. Emma Lo grabbed the Blues top result in the women's long jump with a fourth-place leap of 5.59m.

The University of Toronto next serve as host for the Sharon Anderson Memorial Meet inside the Bruce Kidd Field House at the Athletic Centre on Saturday, Jan. 4. This is then followed by one of the biggest events of the season, the Windsor Can-Am Classic, taking place this season from Jan. 10-11.
