With the OUA Championship just around the corner, the Varsity Blues men's water polo team travelled to Kingston for the annual Queen's Invitational tournament this past weekend.
Heading into the tournament, the Blues held an impressive 5-0 record in all OUA competitions this year. Looking to secure yet another undefeated season for the seventh year in a row, only three teams stood between the Blues and their goal. The weekend was by far the Blues most dominant performance in this season's OUA competition and was a true testament to their character and winning mentality. Scoring 57 goals across the three games played, while only conceding 10, the Blues were firing from the first swim-off to the final buzzer.
U of T's weekend kicked off on Saturday (Nov. 4) morning with a 23-5 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Blues offensive prowess proved to be overwhelming for the Gee-Gees. Toronto captain Diego Gonzalez Delgado led the score sheet with five goals, followed by the impressive first-year standout Omer Sayli who tallied four. Cam Hexter and David Li both recorded hat-tricks in the game, with seven more Blues adding their names to the score sheet.
Later in the day, the Blues faced off against their long-standing rivals, the Carleton Ravens. The Blues strong defence and stellar goalkeeping from Miguel Garcia Alonso, combined with an efficient offensive execution resulted in a 19-3 victory for Toronto over the Ravens. Patrick Conn put up five goals in the game followed by another hat-trick for Hexter. First-year duo Sayli and Andrew Reed joined seniors Delgado and Li, each netting two goals. Timmy Porkazemi, James Glaser and Calan Falconer rounded out the scoring with a goal a piece.
Toronto's final test came in the form of the host Queen's Gaels on Sunday (Nov. 5) morning. Having beaten the Gaels only 14-7 in their first matchup of the season back in September, the Blues came into the game hungry to make a statement. They did just that earning a 15-2 victory in the Sunday showdown. After a quick opening goal for Toronto from Sayli, the Gaels responded tying the game at 1-1. The Gaels would only score one more goal in the game, converting a penalty shot later in the first quarter. The Varsity Blues dominated the rest of the game on both the offensive and defensive side, with another stand-out performance from goalie Alonso, shutting out the Gaels for the remaining three quarters. Much like the tournament began, it ended in the same way, with Delgado and Sayli leading the score sheet grabbing four goals each, and Hexter putting up his third hat-trick of the weekend. Another two goals from Glaser and one from Conn and Porkazemi resulted in the victory for Toronto, and an 8-0 record on the season.
The Blues now look towards the OUA Championship which is being held in Ottawa on Saturday, Nov. 26 and Sunday, Nov. 27. The team is heading into the championship feeling as confident as ever, thanks to the consistent offensive execution and stout defence. The Blues enter the OUA Championship with a bye straight to the semifinal round, and they look to win their seventh consecutive OUA title.
