The University of Toronto Varisty Blues men's hockey team won 3-2 in the shootout against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday (Nov. 3) night at Varsity Arena.
The Blues got themselves on the scoresheet midway through the first period, when second-year forward Nicholas Wong set up captain Cole Purboo to secure the first goal of the game.
The second-period was met with an intense back-and-forth battle, and a late period penalty from Toronto set the Golden Hawks up to score their first goal of the game.
After six minutes of play in the third period, forward Jacob King was able to tap the puck past Golden Hawks goalie Christian Propp off of a Zach Smith rebound. With seconds remaining in the third period, Golden Hawks centre Eli Reimer scored to send the game to overtime.
The Blues had many scoring opportunities through overtime but were unable to find the back of the net, which ultimately brought the game to the shootout.
Clutch performances from Purboo, who recorded the Blues only shootout goal, and goalie Jett Alexander, who didn't allow a single goal in the shootout, led the blue and white to victory. Alexander finished the game with 32 saves for his fifth win of the season.
The Blues are back in action tomorrow (Nov. 4) night on the road, where they will face off against the Waterloo Warriors. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. The game will be streamed online via oua.tv.
