Continuing their season in the golden state, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's water polo team competed in a quartet of matches versus NCAA opponents during a California road trip this past weekend.
Beginning their trip in La Mirada, California, the Blues dropped a close contest 12-9 versus the Biola Eagles on Friday (Oct. 6) morning. U of T were competitive in the early going, keeping the match tied 3-3 after one quarter of play, However, Biola pulled away with a four goal fourth quarter to secure the home pool victory. Blues veteran Diego Gonzalez Delgado paced the offence with a hat-trick, while first-year standout Calan Falconer added two goals. Toronto scoring was rounded out by single markers from Patrick Conn, Cameron Hexter, Timmy Pourkazemi, and Aidan Principe.
Competing in a second match on Friday, Toronto battled to a 14-9 win over the Cuesta Cougars to finish their first day out in California. Toronto was propelled to victory by a six goal third quarter, with the trio of Pourkazemi, Conn, and Diego Gonzalez Delgado all finishing the match with hat-tricks. Pourkazemi proved vital as a facilitator, adding five assists for an eight point performance. Blues goalie Miguel Garcia Alonso made five saves in the win. On the scoresheet, Hexter added two goals, while Camilo Cortes and David Li recorded a goal each for Toronto to round out the team's scoring.
Back in the pool on Saturday (Oct. 7), the Blues found themselves competing in Riversiide, California where they dropped both matches beginning with a close 14-11 loss to the Redlands Bulldogs. Recording his third hat-trick in as many matches, Diego Gonzalez Delgado once again led the U of T offence, while Pourkazemi added another two goals to his weekend. Joining the scoresheet for the Blues was a two goal outing for James Glaser and single goals from Principe, Conn, Hexter, and first-year utility Rhys Carr. In net, Miguel Garcia Alonso added another seven saves.
Running out of steam, Toronto dropped their final outing 26-7 to the California Baptist Lancers. Diego Gonzalez Delgado concluded his road trip with 13 total goal after registering another four markers in the Saturday night finale. Conn registered two more goals for U of T, while Hexter recorded a single marker.
The Blues next return to Varsity Pool where they will begin a home-and-home series with the McMaster Maraduers on Monday, Oct. 16 in Toronto. Action from the Athletic Centre begins at 8:50 p.m.
