Multiple members of the Varsity Blues family spent the past few weeks across the pond, competing at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
Individually, backstroke phenom, Kylie Masse made her mark in numerous events, while Maddy Kelly and Lucia Stafford ran in the 800m and 1500m races, respectively.
In team events, Amanda Woodcroft was a member of the Canadian women's field hockey team, and Keegan Pereira was the captain of the men's field hockey squad.
Masse left the event securing one goal medal and four silvers. Along with her gold medal, Masse also set the Games record in the 50 backstroke with a time of 27:31. Her silver medal performances came in the 100, and 200 backstrokes, as well as the 4x100 mixed medley relay and the 4x100 women's medley relay.
Running the 1500 race, Stafford qualified for the final before placing 11
th with a time of 4:13.83. In the 800 race, Kelly completed her heat with a time of 2:02.99 but did not qualify for the final.
In field hockey, Woodcroft's Canadian crew finished the tournament with a 3-0-2 record and placed fifth overall. The team finished third in their group with a 2-0-2 record, picking up wins over Wales and Ghana. From there, they qualified for the classification 5-6 final, where they defeated Scotland 3-1. Meanwhile, on the men's side, Pereira and his team finished fourth in their pool with a 0-1-3 record before falling 4-3 to Pakistan in the classification 7-8 final.
The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games were the 22
nd edition of the Games, running from July 28 – August 8.
