The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's curling team finished just one win shy of the playoffs at the 2022 OUA curling championships, February 25-27, in Waterloo, Ont.
Â
Competing in one of three five-team pools, the Blues finished round-robin play with a 1-3 record.
Â
With all five members of the Blues team playing in their first OUA curling championship, the young squad took to the ice in the morning of February 25 for their opening contest. Taking on the Rams, the Blues were able to gain tremendous experience, but fell to the Rams 8-2.
Having gotten their feet wet, the Blues were able to bounce back in the afternoon draw, scoring a 6-5 victory over the Queen's Gaels in an extra end. Looking to round out their day with a second straight win Friday evening, Toronto ran into a tough Brock team. The Badgers would go on to win 9-4.
Saturday morning, the Blues played in their fourth straight draw as they finished their round-robin schedule. Going up against the McMaster Marauders, it was just one of those games for Toronto. No matter what they tried, it just wasn't going to be their day as the Blues fell 9-0.
"I am very proud that [the team] did not get down on themselves but I do know that they were sad [seeing] their journey end early," said associate head coach Susan Baird. "They played very well and I think as a newly formed team, they have a lot of potential to build on for next year."
Â
The OUA championship will continue through the weekend wrapping up with the gold medal final on February 27.
