On the day celebrating the 125th anniversary of the rowing team at the University of Toronto, the Varsity Blues are proud to announce a new partnership with the Argonaut Rowing Club (ARC), set to commence April 1, 2022.
Â
Within the structure of this agreement, the Varsity Blues rowing team will move their training headquarters to the Argos boat house, providing them a new and enhanced space to further grow and develop high performance rowers.
Â
"This is an exciting opportunity for the Varsity Blues program and our rowers in particular," stated Beth Ali, executive director, athletics and physical activity at the University of Toronto. "Our goals aligned very well with elements they offer, including opportunities for coaching and long-term athlete development. The decision was carefully reviewed, and in the end, this is the best option for our student-athletes."
Â
Through the ARC, the Blues rowers are considered members of the rowing club and will have access to significant features like Lake Ontario and a 4.1km breakwall-sheltered boating channel that will allow for more potential training days on water in both mornings and afternoons. They will also have use of the newly renovated, fully accessible boathouse facilities throughout the season, including showers, change room, 26-person erg room and weight room which will allow for a full-time training site in all weather conditions during the OUA season.
"We are thrilled to welcome the U of T Varsity Blues rowing team back to ARC and strongly believe in the role a university partnership plays to the overall success of a Club," said Jason van Ravenswaay, president, Argonaut Rowing Club. "The Club is celebrating its 150th anniversary and couldn't be prouder to be starting the next 150 years with the University of Toronto."
Â
The Argonaut Rowing Club has undergone a significant revitalization in both its facilities and membership. The Club has a thriving community rowing program and Junior Program that will provide mentorship and coaching opportunities for our Varsity Blues athletes and a pipeline for recruitment.Â
