VARSITY BLUES READY TO DEFEND CROWN AS PLAYOFF SEASON ARRIVES

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues are entering the 2021 OUA men's water polo playoffs as the defending champions, and have won the last four titles while doing so without losing a single game over the four years.

In a truncated season this fall, the Blues again went undefeated in regular season play to earn the top seed seed in the West Division playoff which will be held at McMaster University on Saturday, November 27.

Toronto is led by captain Diego Gonzalez (Ottawa, ON) who is able to play all over the pool, checking opposing teams' center forwards, setting as a center forward and playing as a power forward with a strong outside shot. Gonzalez also brings to the Varsity Blues his experience in the Canadian National team system.

Fellow third-year player, Bruno Marunica (Regina, SK), is the team's leading scorer.

Marunica has the ability to find the back of the net in several ways and is dangerous in close, on the counter-attack and on the power play.

The Blues rely on starting netminder, Minos Kotsambasis (Kitchener, ON), to anchor its stingy defence.  Like Gonzalez, Kotsambasis has experience in the national team pipeline.

"This year is very special for the U of T water polo program as we are recovering from the effects of Covid-19 on the sport," stated Blues head coach, Tuna Tali. "The team is quite young with numerous first year players. Our second year players also comprise a large part of the team and are very motivated due to the fact they were not able to compete at the OUA's last year. So far we have done a good job building our game and competing with our opponents and hope to keep that momentum going in the playoffs."
