The top-seeded Blues take on the Western Mustangs in semifinal action on Friday at 4 p.m., while the Brock Badgers and Guelph Gryphons will battle in the second semifinal at 6:30 p.m.
Friday's semifinal winners will not only play for the OUA Quigley Cup on Saturday, but will also advance to the 2020 U SPORTS championship, March 13-15, at the University of Calgary.
The Blues earned hosting rights as the top seed in the East after defeating the Waterloo Warriors in straight sets in quarter-final action on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs and Badgers both notched 3-0 quarter-final victories over Queen's and York, respectively, while Guelph earned their spot with a thrilling 3-2 upset victory over the then No. 3 nationally-ranked Ryerson Rams.
TORONTO VS WESTERN: Toronto defeated Western in a heated battle, coming from behind to win 3-2 (20-25, 12-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-9) in their lone regular season meeting on Feb. 1 at Goldring Centre.
The Blues will be looking to their veteran corps to lead them to their second straight OUA title. Fifth-year right side hitter Alina Dormann finished the season ranked second in the province with 4.3 points per set and third with 3.51 kills per set. The four-time all-Canadian and fellow fifth-year veteran Anna Licht led the Blues with 35 and 34 serving aces, respectively.
Licht highlights U of T's depth, which sees five players averaging over 2.4 points per set. The middle blocker from Toronto topped the Blues with 51 total blocks. She, along with third-year middle Jenna Woock, are vital to the Blues success in the middle.
On the left side, U of T boasts a strong hitting duo in Caleigh Cruickshank and Hope Kotun. Cruickshank, a fifth-year veteran and nursing student, has averaged 2.5 points per set, while Kotun has had a breakout second half for the Blues, averaging 2.4 points per set.
Western is led by fourth-year outside hitter Melissa Langegger, who paced the team in kills with 200, while also finishing second in the OUA in aces per set (0.59). Langegger wasn't just an offensive catalyst; however, as she also topped the team in digs with 167.
Fellow senior Jessica Lam set the table for the team with 568 assists, which ranked her fifth in the conference in that category.
