CURRIER, FOUR BLUES EARN OUA HONOURS

University of Toronto Varsity Blues libero Sophia Currier earned the East division's award of merit as Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced 2019-20 women's volleyball major award winners and all-stars on Monday afternoon.

Alina Dormann and Jenna Woock were named OUA East first team all-stars, Anna Licht earned second team honours and Lidya Canturk was named to the East all-rookie team.

Currier, a fourth-year libero from Williamsburg, Ont., helped lead the Blues to an OUA-best 17-2 regular season finish, good for first place in the OUA East division.

She is pursuing a commerce degree at U of T's prestigious Rotman School of Management and is also an active member of the community. Currier is the director of marketing for Rotman commerce students in sports, while also serving as a mentor for the University College eMentorship program.

She volunteered as a camp counselor at Camp Oochigeas, a nonprofit oncology camp that brings laughter and joy to kids and families affected by childhood cancer and also volunteered with the federated health campaign, raining support for up to 20 health charities in Ontario.

Currier sits on U of T's Varsity Board, a standing committee of the Faculty's Council of Athletics and Recreation, which is made up with representation from each of the 42 Varsity Blues teams. The board meets regularly to discuss important issues and to ensure all students have the best possible athletics experience during their time at the University of Toronto.

She has also been a Blues Buddy Up volunteer since 2017, a leadership and character building initiative designed to target personal and interpersonal skill development in elementary aged students.

Dormann earns her fifth OUA East first team all-star nod in as many years. The right side from Ottawa ranked second in the OUA, averaging 4.3 points per set and third with 3.51 kills per set. Dormann led the Blues with 35 aces, registered double-digit points in all but one match this season and recorded a season-high 22 kills and 24.5 points versus Ryerson on Oct. 26.

Dormann, who represented Canada at the last two FISU Summer Universiade, as well as the 2016 Pan Am Cup, will leave U of T as the Varsity Blues all-time kills (1,232) and points (1,513) leader.

Woock, a native of Richmond Hill, Ont., was named to the first team for the first time in her career, after back-to-back second team all-star nods. The third-year middle ranked second on the Blues, averaging 2.6 points per set, while leading the team with 0.71 blocks per set and a .408 attack percentage.

A fifth-year middle, Licht garners her third career OUA East second team all-star nod. The Toronto native and health and disease specialist led the Blues with 51 total blocks, ranked second with a .406 hitting percentage and ranked third on the team with 2.5 points per set.

A first-year life science major, Canturk is the second-straight Varsity Blues setter to earn all-rookie team honours after Hayley Goodwin got the nod last season. A native of Istanbul, Turkey, Canturk averaged 5.85 assists per set over 19 matches, while also recording 93 digs.
