The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's squash team head to Niagara-on-the-Lake this weekend (Feb 7-9) for the 2020 OUA championships at White Oaks Resort & Spa.
Both Varsity Blues teams finished with a bronze medal at last year's championships. After a regular season that saw them both placed third in their Jesters division respectively, they will seek to improve and jump up the leaderboards this weekend.
MEN'S PREVIEW: The Blues men finished the Jester's season with an 11-3 record, just behind Waterloo (13-1) and Western (12-2). Toronto started off the season 6-0 before running into the top-seeded Warriors. They didn't let the loss get to them as they continued to stay hot, going 5-2 to finish the season, only dropping narrow matches, 4-3, against McGill and Carleton.
After losing last year's tournament MVP Josh Hollings, the Blues will look to fifth-year standout Alexi Gosset to lead the charge. The Toronto native finished the season with a 4-1 record and is U of T's No. 1 player going into the tournament.
Team captain Yusuf Shalaby comes in at the No. 2 spot again for the Blues. The industrial engineering major from Mississauga, Ont., finished the season with an 8-4 record. Rookie sensation Jonathan Fan rounds out Toronto's top three, finishing the season with an impressive 10-4 record.
Yawar Ashraf, Matthew Lau and Henry Pope round out Toronto's Top 6 for the weekend.
WOMEN'S PREVIEW: Toronto's women finished with a 12-2 record in the Jester's league standings. The Blues dominated the court this season, with their only two losses coming from the Queen's Gaels and Western Mustangs, who occupy the top two spots in the division.
Third-year mechanical engineering major Rhea Dhar is back in the Blues No. 1 position this season. The 2018-19 OUA all-star from Toronto finished the Jester's season with a 10-4 record and went 4-2 at last year's OUA championships.
The Myers sisters, Thandi and Deiriai, hold Toronto's the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively. Thandi, a third-year civil engineering major, finished the season with a 10-4 record, while Deiriai, a third-year health and disease and molecular genetics major, finished with a 10-2 record.
Christine Yaromich, Sun Eui Choi and Alexa Lanese round out Toronto's Top 6 heading into the provincial championships.
