WOMEN 3RD, MEN 4TH AT OUA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Results

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field teams reached the podium eight more times on Day 2 as the 2020 OUA championships wrapped up on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) at York University.
 
TEAM STANDINGS: The Blues women notched 95.5 points to finish third behind the Guelph Gryphons (209) and Western Mustangs (119). Toronto's men racked up 74 points to place fourth behind Guelph (209), Western (87.5) and York (79).
 
MEN'S RESULTS: Fourth-year veteran Jack Berkshire won the men's 600m after earning the silver medal last season. The industrial engineering major from Fredericton crossed the finish line in 1:19.20 to claim the top spot.
 
Sophomore standout Femi Akinduro successfully defended his OUA men's triple jump crown with a best just of 14.79m. Linden Liles-McCurdy was eighth (13.47m).
 
Rookie thrower Frank Vreugdenhil claimed the men's shot put bronze medal with a best throw of 15.05m. Julian Romano placed sixth (13.47m), while Mojtaba Mehry was eighth (12.74m).
 
Alex Augimeri, Emmett Bravakis, Carson Bradley and James Kanu placed fourth in the men's 4x200 relay in 1:28.97.
 
After sitting in seventh place after Day 1, Phillipe Johns moved into fifth place in the men's heptathlon with 4327 points. Johns finished second in the 60m hurdles (8.64), third in the 60m (7.30), shot put (11.36m) and 1000m (2:51.51) and seventh in the long jump (5.71m) and high jump (1.56m).
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS: Third-year high jumper Emily Branderhorst won her first career OUA title. The Fullarton, Ont., native cleared 1.69m to solidify her third straight podium finish. Fellow Varsity Blue Hannah Rolfe earned the bronze medal, clearing 1.66m.
 
Rookie jumper Kristen Schulz earned her second medal in as many days, winning the women's triple jump with a best jump of 12.12m. Odessa O'Brien placed sixth (11.50m).
 
Elizabeth Martin, Katrina Innanen, Maya Ryan and Onome Gbinje earned the women's 4x200 relay silver medal in 1:38.62.
 
Martin also claimed the 60m dash bronze medal in 7.44 seconds, while Onome Gbinje was sixth in 7.63 seconds.
 
Ryan, Fiona Huang, Anyia Anesi and Innanen finished just off the podium in the 4x400 relay, clocking a time of 3:52.51.
 
UP NEXT: The Blues now set their sights on the 2020 U SPORTS Championships, March 5-7, hosted by the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
