The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's rugby team notched their first win of the season, defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks 36-26 on Sunday, September 8 at University Stadium in Waterloo, Ont.
Â
It marks Toronto's first win over Laurier since 2012.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues got out to a 12-0 start as Khadi Dako scored two tries in the first two minutes and Monika Hirsch converted one. The Hawks responded though, scoring three tries and converting two, to lead 19-12 early in the second half.
Â
U of T regained the lead as Briana Leslie-Joachim and Francesca Griffin scored two tries within two minutes of each other, with Hirsch adding one more conversion. Laurier took a 26-24 lead off of a penalty try midway through the second half, but it was all Toronto from there as Griffin scored her second of the game and Idara Okon added some insurance in the dying minutes of the match.
Â
UP NEXT: The Blues head into a bye week before they travel to Peterborough, Ont., to take on the Trent Excalibur on Saturday, September 21 at 1 p.m.
