University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field alumna Madeleine Kelly won the women's 800m at the 2019 Canadian track and field championships on Saturday night (July 27) in Montreal.
Â
Â
Kelly executed a last second move in between two-time Olympian Melissa Bishop and fellow standout Lindsey Butterworth to capture the 2019 women's 800-metre Canadian title in 2:02.37, just .03 seconds ahead of Bishop.
"Last night we were going for third," said Kelly. "Melissa and I are both from Ottawa Valley so I've admired her for such a long time and she's been such an inspiration for me. It's pretty surreal to do that today and I give her a lot of credit for running that fast today."

Â
Kelly was a member of one OUA and three U SPORTS track and field championship teams, as well as one U SPORTS cross country championship team during her five seasons (2013-18) as a Varsity Blue.
Â
On the track, Kelly is a three-time OUA first team all-star and U SPORTS first team all-Canadian. At the OUA championships, she helped the Blues to two first-place finishes in both the 4x400 relay (2016, 2017) and the 4x800 relay (2017, 2018).
Â
Individually, Kelly earned back-to-back silver medals in the 600m and 1000m in both 2017 and 2018. She is a member of three straight national 4x800 relay gold-medal winning teams (2016-18), while also helping U of T to a first-place finish in the 4x400 relay in 2017. That same season, she claimed the national silver medals in the 600m and 1000m.
Â
As a member of the cross country team, Kelly is a two-time OUA second team all-star after placing ninth overall in 2015 and 11th in 2016.
Current Varsity Blues standout Jasmine Lew also claimed the silver medal in the U20 women's long jump (5.78m).Â
