BLUES LOOK TO REPEAT IN KINGSTON

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues figure skating team travels to Kingston, Ont., for the 2019 OUA championship, February 12-13, at the Invista Centre.

The Blues are looking to capture their fourth straight OUA figure skating banner and seventh in the program's history dating back to 1975. A big reason why U of T won the previous year was their depth. They reached the podium in 12-of-14 events over the two-day championship in 2018.

Under first-year head coach Brittany de Lapeyre, the team has not missed a beat this season, placing first overall in both the Fall and Winter Invitationals.

Hanna Broker has enjoyed a breakout rookie season for the Blues so far and is coming off a triple gold-medal performance at the Winter Invitational. The Brampton, Ont., native won gold in the solo dance, open rhythm dance with Jessica Reid, and in the dance fours with partners Reid, Stephanie Carroll and Emma Jianopolous. She will skate the open rhythm dance with Reid and the dance four with the same partners in Kingston, Ont.

Two-time OUA all-star Chyna Hui is another skater to watch for at her fourth championship. The veteran skater is slated to skate in the star 10 solo dance and will also pair with Melanie Zavitski for the 8/9 similar skate. She and Zavitski captured first place at the Winter Invitational in the 8/9 similar skate.

Keiko Marshall will skate the novice short program for the Blues. The Burlington, Ont., native placed second at the last year's provincial championship and held the same spot at the Winter Invitational earlier in the month.

Rookie Ehren Chang is set to participate in the men's open freeskate and the team synchro. He placed third in the individual event, while helping Toronto snag second in synchro at the Winter Invitational.

This year's championship kicks off on Tuesday, February 13 at 9:30 a.m., as competition starts with the women's star 10 similar dance, and will wrap up the following afternoon with the synchro teams event. The championship trophy and banner, as well as medals for each participating skater, will be presented to the winning institution at the conclusion of the championship.
