OUA CHAMPIONS! BLUES DOWN RAVENS FOR 4TH STRAIGHT PROVINCIAL BANNER

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's water polo team defeated the Carleton Ravens 12-9 in the gold-medal match of the 2019 OUA championship on Sunday, December 1 in London, Ont.

With the win, the Blues earn their fourth consecutive OUA banner and 13th in the past 18 seasons. U of T and Carleton have met in eight of the last nine OUA championship finals, with the Blues now holding a 5-3 advantage.

Deigo Gonzalez Delgado was named the 2019 most valuable player, while Andrei Velasevic earned most valuable goalie honours. They, along with Tony Giannatis were named OUA all-stars.

FROM HEAD COACH TUNA TALI: "We knew it was going to be a very tough game and a close game. It gets more and more difficult every year because of the amount of new faces on our team but we found a way to keep the intensity up and we're extremely happy right now".

TORONTO STATS: Bruno Marunica led the Blues with five goals, while Gonzales Delgado and Giannatis each tallied two. Patrick Conn, Harrison Young and Stefan Mitic added single tallies in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Toronto got out to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter and held onto that narrow lead throughout the game. Carleton scored three in the second quarter as the Blues held a 7-5 lead at halftime. U of T spread the gap with a 4-2 third quarter to take an 11-7 lead heading into the final frame. The Ravens outscored the Blues 2-1 in the fourth, but it wasn't enough as Toronto came away with the three-goal victory.
