SMITH MEDALS AT GANARASKA

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues mountain biking team reached past the halfway point of their 2019 season with a challenging race at the Ganaraska Forest Centre located near Port Hope, Ontario.

There were a number of strong finishes on a long course, including a string of fourth-place finishes across the divisions. Debra Watkins in the woman's expert division, followed by an impressive fourth-place finish by rookie American import Carlin Henikoff in the woman's sport division and yet another fourth-place finish by John Hinton in the men's sport division.

It was third-year student Garrett Smith who managed to break through and make it to the podium by winning a bronze medal in the men's sport division. He narrowly missed the silver medal by a second. Garrett, who is studying math, stats, and physics is from Guelph, Ont.,  and says he loves racing mountain bikes with U of T because "it has both a great team environment, with lots of camaraderie, and a more competitive side to it.  It is also a great way to get out of the city on the weekends and enjoy nature."

The Blues will be wrapping up their 2019 race season at their final race taking place Sunday, Oct 6 at Hardwood Ski and Bike near Barrie, Ontario.
