The full force of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues mountain biking team thundered along the Fall forest colour trails of Hardwood Ski and Bike near Barrie, Ontario this past Sunday. This location is the former Pan Am Games host mountain biking venue.

Leading the pack of University Cup Race #4 for a second time in as many weeks was Garret Smith from Guelph, Ont. Smith powered through the fast course and for the second competition in a row he came within seconds of the silver medal in an exciting finish. Smith ended the season ranked second overall out of a field of 50 in the men's B division. Eric Deare placed sixth in the very competitive men's A division. Â

On the woman's side both Michal Leckie (Team Captain) and first-year graduate student Debra Watkins finished in the top 10 for the women's A division.

Also putting in excellent races and placing in the top 10 in the men's B division were John Hinton (5th), Jamie Williams (7th), Jonathan Whittall (9th) and Caleb Goodfellow (10th).

This was the final race of the 2019 Ontario University Cup Mountain Bike Race Series and the U of T team ranked second in the province. Â

Coach Wright said he was "very pleased with the team's performance, participation and the energy that this years team had and is very much looking forward to seeing what they will accomplish next season."
