GAME OF THE WEEK: BLUES HOST EXCALIBUR SATURDAY AT VARSITY STADIUM

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team hosts the Trent Excalibur this Saturday, September 15 at Varsity Stadium. Game time is set for 1:45 p.m.

The Blues also take on the York Lions at 8:30 a.m.

First-year head coach Jim Calder boasts a roster of fresh new faces as only nine of 24 players from last year's team return.

The squad got off to a solid start last weekend. They dropped their first game to the Laurier Golden Hawks 14-8, but bounced back later in the day with a 6-2 victory over the Guelph Gryphons. Brynne Yarranton, who joins the Blues after two seasons at the University of Vermont, scored seven goals combined in the two games. The first-year medical student's performance earned her U of T athlete of the week honours.

Midfielder Laurel McGillis and attacker Mary-Anne Meerasabeer are returning veterans that are also expected to chip in offensively. The two combined for six goals in the season openers this past weekend.

Defensively, the team returns a solid corps in Caitlin Downs, Marie Mutware, Gina Yang, Jada Singh and goalie-turned-defender Daniela Solomon. The group helped hold the Gryphons to only a pair of goals on Sunday, whereas in Guelph's two games the day before, they scored a combined 30 goals.

The Trent Excalibur are a good all-around team and can keep up with the best in the OUA. They have a 1-1 record, beating Western and falling to Laurier last Saturday. In both contests though, the score was decided by a single goal. Second-year attacker Leah Michel is the attacker to watch out for. She currently leads the Excalibur with five goals, highlighted by a hat trick in a 10-9 loss to the Golden Hawks.
