The University of Toronto men's hockey program is pleased to announce that former Oshawa Generals captain Joe Manchurek has accepted his offer of admission and committed to play for the Varsity Blues beginning in September.
"Joe brings us a little bit of everything," said Varsity Blues head coach Ryan Medel. "He's a big, physical forward that can play in both offensive and defensive situations. He's shown he's a tireless worker on and off the ice. That's something we take a lot of pride in with our group. But Joe also brings some intangibles that are hard to find. He's a former captain and he's won a Memorial Cup, while playing on the biggest stage in junior hockey. We couldn't be happier to have him a part of our program moving forward."
The 6-foot-2 forward from Tecumseh, Ont., suited up for the Generals for four seasons from 2013-17, serving as team captain in 2016-17. During that time, Manchurek racked up 48 goals and 64 assists for 112 points in 239 regular season games. He added eight goals and four assists for 12 post-season career points, while helping Oshawa win the 2015 Memorial Cup alongside current Varsity Blue Aidan Wallace.
Manchurek brings even more leadership to the Blues strong 2018-19 recruiting class. He is the fourth graduating junior captain, along with Riley Bruce (North Bay Battalion - OHL), Mike Webster (Barrie Colts – OHL) and Kyle Clarke (North York Rangers – OJHL).
"It is a privilege to be at the University of Toronto for academics and athletics," said Manchurek. "There is so much support on and off the ice. I got a really good feeling from the players and coaches about the future of the hockey team and I can tell everyone is very eager to get on the ice and try to win a championship. Furthermore, I am excited to pursue hockey and work towards getting a degree at the top academic school in Canada."
Machurek will begin his studies in humanities within U of T's Woodsworth College in the fall.
