The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 4-2 to the Brock Badgers on Saturday (Feb. 14) night at Varsity Arena.
After a pregame ceremony to honour the graduating Blues, it was the Brock Badgers who scored the icebreaker in the opening three minutes of the game as as Ryan Johnstone scored his fourth goal of the season. First-year goalie Nick Surzycia held the fort as U of T settled into the game. The Etobicoke native made key saves to keep the margin at one-goal. As the period progressed, Toronto settled in and gained momentum heading into the first intermission despite trailing 1-0.
The second period was hard hitting with back-and-forth action. As both teams looked to establish puck presence and garner momentum for their side. Scoring ramped up late in the frame as Stephen Calisti's shot from the point found the back of the net. Unphased by the goal against, Toronto dug deep and cut Brock's lead in half as Ryan Evenhuis picked his spot and beat goaltender Ben Bonisteel to give the Blues signs of life. With three seconds left in the period, Ryan Stephien found the back of the net as the Blues went into the third period trailing by two goals.
Playing with urgency, the Blue and White threw everything they had at the Badgers. Midway through the period, Brock took advantage of a pressing Blues offence but Surzycia made the best of his 21 saves in the game. The chemical engineering student slammed the door to rob Matt Duarte on a breakaway to keep the Blues chances alive.
Midway through the period, Brock gained a three-goal lead when Andrew Amousse notched his second goal of the campaign. U of T continued to battle and outshot the Badgers 13-4 in the third period. As the Blue and White gave Brock everything they had, Bonisteel was strong between the pipes to keep the puck out of the back of the net.
With two minutes remaining in the game, second-year forward Sean Clarke showed the Blues still had a chance with his sixth goal of the season. As time progressed the Blues continued to fight for every inch of the ice, continuing to lay everything they have on the line but weren't able to find the back of the net before zero's hit the clock.
The Blues conclude the 2025-26 season with a 13-12-3 (W-L-OTL) record and finished seventh in the OUA West standings, missing out on the OUA playoffs. U of T will now turn their attention to the 2026-27 season in hopes of returning to the postseason.
