BLUES PLAY TIGHT CONTEST IN WINDSOR

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 3-2 to the Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Feb. 7) night in Windsor, Ont.

In a tight late-season matchup between two OUA West opponents both teams traded chances early as the pace of the game ramped up quickly. The Lancers looked to establish momentum on home ice but the Blues stayed composed defensively and limited high-danger opportunities through the opening half of the period. Toronto broke through late in the frame when fourth-year forward Eddie Yan capitalized with the man advantage, finishing off a play of passes from second-year defenceman Ranvir Gill-Shane and third-year defenceman Owen Luik.

U of T carried the momentum from Yan's goal into the second period, controlling stretches of play and generating sustained offensive zone pressure. The Blues extended their lead to two-goals when first-year forward Ryan Watt found space and buried a chance after strong puck movement from third-year forward Christian Stevens and second-year forward Cooper Way. The Lancers were able to cut the lead in half with a goal from Brady Hinz before the second intermission.

Midway through the third period, the Lancers scored an equalizer when Aaron Shaw struck on the power play to knot the game at 2-2. Midway through the final 20 minutes of play, Colt Smith scored the go-ahead goal. Despite the momentum swing, U of T continued to battle as they generated chances late and continued pressing but were unable to score an equalizer before the final horn.

Goaltenders Rayce Ramsay and Nick Surzycia combined for 41 saves.

The race to the postseason continues for the Blues as they'll travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take in the Waterloo Warriors on Friday (Feb. 13) night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on oua.tv.
