OUA FIELD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team looks to return to the top of the provincial podium as they head to Waterloo, Ont., for the 2018 OUA championship, October 26-28.

The Blues have dominated all season long under second-year head coach Cassius Mendonca. The Blue and White outscored opponents 37-9 and finished the season in second place in the OUA standings with a 10-1-1 record.

As the No. 2 seed, Toronto will meet the No. 7 McGill Martlets (0-12-0) in OUA quarter-final action on Friday at 3:00 p.m. The winner of that game will go onto face the winner of No. 3 Guelph and No. 6 Western in OUA semi-final action on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

The championship culminates on Sunday with the bronze (1pm) and gold (3pm) medal matches. The OUA champion will then host the 2018 U SPORTS national championship best-of-three series versus the Canada West champions, November 2-4.

The Varsity Blues have won an OUA-leading 32 provincial banners since 1971 and will look to return to the top of the podium after a bronze-medal finish in 2017.

Twin sisters Emily and Hillary Ziraldo led the team with nine and eight goals, respectively, this season.

After notching five goals in the first five games of the season, Anna Costanzo sat out due to injury. She returned to action last Sunday and scored one goal in Toronto's 2-1 victory over Guelph.  Rachel Spouge and Rianna Vumbaca have also proved to be scoring threats for Toronto this season.

Third-year goalie Elizabeth O'Hara, who is a member of the Canadian junior development team, ranks second in the OUA with a mere eight goals against this season.
